Russell Gallery is excited to bring together artists from around the Midwest and ask the question of them - what is your wish for 2009?

The gallery will show work from January 24 through February 21. The opening day show will have platform fashion modeling by talent from the Abandoned In Detroit fashion showcase project. Music will be from DJs Gabe Real, Thomas Emmanuel, and Marcus Beier. The art exhibition brings together more than 30 artists in a variety of mediums. An exclusive VIP area will feature free food and flowing drinks, well worth the low price of $10. General admission to the gallery is free and it is open to all ages.

The gallery is located in the SE corner of Russell Bazaar. The bazaar has an international flair with many great shops and every week the mix of shops present changes. Fashion designers from the Abandoned In Detroit project should contact Fuzzytek for some VALUABLE late-breaking news exclusive for them! This weekend is certain to bring great crowds and a lot of fun. So if you want to get your party started before night falls - the Russell Bazaar and Gallery's My Wish For 2009 exhibition are a fantastic way to work your way into evening.

Plans are underway for the Detroit Erotic Arts Collaborative on February 7-8, 2009. I'm planning to be there and setting up my schedule of photo sessions now. Please do not wait to contact me if interested in shooting during the event. There will be MANY photographers and MANY models. it will be somewhat chaotic and planning too late will just add to the chaos.

Granted there will be some reading this post whom are not interested. THIS IS AN 18+ EVENT. You will be required to have legal photo documents at sign-in for the event certifying you are at least 18 years of age.

DEAC is a group shoot that is focused on Artistic Nude, Figure Nude, Implied Nude, Fetish Nude, and Bondage Nude content. I am open to shooting all genres and discussing compensation with those I shoot with for work sold.

Yes there is an entrance fee for the group shoot. I do not collect the fee - it is being handled through the DEAC website via Paypal or contacting DVS. The entrance fees vary according to the days you'll be attending and if you are a past participant in DEAC shoots. I participated in DEAC 1.5, which was held in Pontiac at Clutch Cargo and MONA earlier this year.

If you are interested in booking time with me at DEAC, please call me at 248-632-6156 and discuss. You can also send an email to request(at)fuzzytek.com with websize (no bigger than 300kb each) photos of yourself, your measurements (height, weight, bust, waist, hips, shoe, dress, and age), the type of shoot you desire, what clothing/equipment you have for the shoot (it doesn't all rest on you to provide). You will also be required to register for the event as noted above. I will be filling my schedule the next few weeks in a tentative manner because scheduling around so many people can be a nightmare. There will be rare instances I will tell you that we are locked in on our appointed time when we first speak. I will be working through a shared Google document and calendar events with talent I'm shooting with. This is so I can keep on track in planning for the event. I have the ability to bring in an assistant (additional fee) so I'm considering who will work best with me in this environment and assist in keeping things on-track.

Please understand I am attending to create MARKETABLE CONTENT, not simply to grow my portfolio - especially in areas that I have plenty of photos. Be creative and bring something more than a pretty face / body to the shoot. We can discuss that when planning the session.

Location and Scheduling

Location will be the Leland Hotel, 400 Bagley, Detroit 48226 which is the intersection of Cass and Bagley, just south of Grand River and west of the Times Square People Mover station. Hours will begin at noon both Saturday and Sunday. Last time slot Saturday ends 8:00pm, and Sunday at 6:00pm. Hourly slots are planned, however if you contact me to hold a bondage session I would like to book that as a double.

There are certain areas at the location which are booked in advance, so I'm looking to pre-pay ASAP and arrange the locations desired most.

Imagine:

Being 14 years old with 3 children living in a shelter and infected with the AIDS Virus!

I volunteer for an organization every year on World AIDS Day and several times during the year to help raise awareness about the disease! Well, about 3 years ago, a young lady walked up to my table to get information and to be tested! During the 20 min wait for her results she explained that had just turned 14 (looked 22) and that she had 3 children, and living in a shelter! I gave her information to help her get out of her circumstance and she broke down in tears! When I asked her why she was crying, she stated that I reminded her of her mother until she was about 8 yrs old! She said that her mom got hooked on drugs when she around 9 and that she didn't have a father in the house so it was up to her (@ 9) to help take care of her 6 brothers and sisters! So she became mom and at the age of 11 social services cut them off, and no money was coming in! So since she was always tall for her age, she decided to dress herself up and turn to men for the cash! NOBODY ever taught this young woman how to protect herself, and now she has 3 children and a history of STD's!

Then the results came back and the counselor pulled the young lady into a small room, in which she emerged 15min later in tears! Because of privacy laws I couldn't see her results, but it was obvious! The young lady clutched the handle of the stroller, looked at her babies and burst out in tears again for about 2min and then walked out the door!

I was devastated, for the next several days because as a woman and mother, my heart bled for her and her children!

I am passing this story along, because the statistics don't lie and as African Americans the odds are stacked against us! We continue to complain and ignore the problem, when it is right here continuously slapping our community in the face! Blacks are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. While making up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, we account for more than 49 percent of AIDS cases. AIDS is now the leading cause of death for Black women ages 25 to 34, and the second leading cause of death for Black men ages 35 to 44. Young people in the United States continue to be at risk for HIV and AIDS. At the end of 2007, in 45 states with reporting, almost 46,000 young people ages 13-24 were living with HIV, comprising about sixteen percent of all HIV infections. 62% of these new cases in the youth group were African America.

From 2001-2004, 62 percent of HIV/AIDS diagnoses in young people aged 13-24 were in males, and 32 percent were in females.
In 2005, blacks and Latinos accounted for 84 percent of all new HIV infections among 13- to 19-year-olds and 76 percent of HIV infections among 20- to 24-year-olds in the United States even though, together, they represent only about 32 percent of people these ages. Asian and Pacific Islanders (APIs) and American Indians and Alaska Natives account for about one percent of new HIV infections among women ages 13-24.
Young women of color suffer disproportionate rates - in 2004, black women and Latinas accounted for 83 percent of new infections in 13- to 24-year-old women in the United States, even though, together, they represent only about 26 percent of U.S. women these ages. In addition, black women account for 62 percent and Latinas for 19 percent of cumulative AIDS cases among women ages 13-24.

I made a visit to Arts In The City, held at Willy's Overland Lofts by Fusion Detroit. It was an artists' fair that was brought together quickly. Piper's photostream on Flickr has a lot of nice photos of the work shown. I took a few photos and they can be found through this link to Flickr.com. I was doing a lot of talking with vendors seeking their interest in exhibiting for Christmas In Style coming December 21. It was great to meet people and I have to thank Hope for taking me there, enjoying the show, and returning me home.

313FAD, Detroit's Fashion Movement

I was busy posting items on 313FAD, modifying the interface a bit, and updating the software this morning. This is going to be a busy afternoon with a fashion focus into the evening. While the Detroit Docs Film Festival is wrapping up today, there simply isn't time to put that into my day. The closing party is at 1515 Broadway and begins at 7pm. I'll be around the Cultural Center at that time.

My original plans were to be working around the film RAISED ALONE, however the recently published shoot schedule doesn't have me on set this weekend.

My plans are:

Completion of a CD of photos for a client to be delivered this afternoon
Website design work
Catwalk 08, a benefit fashion show with donations to HIV/AIDS awareness and treatment. The 7th annual Catwalk show is presented by Rodney Howell, Hairshion and Silver Lining Management. Several models I have worked with will be walking and designers whom I've shot their shows will be present as well. Check the post on 313FAD.com.
The Black Party being held at the Detroit Historical Museum hosted by Mr CHicks. I know Gina has been gathering talent to appear in that show for the past month.

So I'll be out visiting the Cultural Center around 4pm, checking into what is going on with various fashion talent I know.

Detroit Erotica Ball 2

I tried to get photos for the art exhibition printed at a print shop... seems the adult content has them shy. Sucks because I really really want to show some large format work. All that we'll have from that printer are copies of this poster. I'll have 3 copies put on 16x20 foamcore, plus additional prints in 12x18 format.

I am VERY thankful to have the Epson R1900 here at the Submissive Tales studio, which can handle up to 13x19 paper. Photo paper and ink comes at a cost... sometimes I wonder if the artwork that I've seen sold for $50 in a frame takes into account the cost of supplies to create it. I mean net profit on that has to be perhaps $5-10. So you get a couple drinks at the bar for every piece you sell?? Please understand the expense of creation, plus do something to acknowledge the talent of the photographer, model, makeup artist, wardrobe and so forth that went into creating the image seen.

The Ball starts in 32.5 hours, so I've got to get back to selecting, printing, framing activities. Quite a bit to do before showtime, and obviously I'll have to cut that time down more when it comes to being there before the show starts, decorating, and still have to select clothing to wear (that's another 2 hour block out of tomorrow).

I did buy some sweet masks for MCing the event. Hope you'll be there to see the spectacle of several months of work. What has transpired in the past year since the first ball is quite different than the rush of three weeks put into 2007's FIRST Detroit Erotica Ball.

This is a FIXED lens camera - F2.0-3.5; 28-200mm. Zoom is 7x with 2x digital enhancement. Shutter noise on this camera is extremely quiet. The pivoting body allows for photos around corners, off the floor, and from overhead. Autofocus can be joystick controlled to select any point in the frame.

I have the following lens available for this camera, generally using the F2.8 which is best quality lens.

F2.8-3.5; 14-54mm
F4-5.6; 40-150mm (kit lens)

Note: ISO range for this camera runs very high with ISO boost, up to 1600 enabling better quality low-light images.

ISO noise: If using the Olympus F2.8 lens with the body's ISO boost feature it can take crisper photos than the Sony F2.0 lens. Noise with ISO is a factor. At ISO 400 the Sony's images become questionable. The range for ISO selection on the Olympus is very wide. Digital correction through editing can interpolate noise, and smooth noise out of photo through manual editting of selected photos. Automated processes can deliver good results, although manual adjustment on each photo produces best results.

I'd like to say thank you to everyone that participated in creating The American Soldier Rock Fash Tribute Concert on Sunday, August 31. You stood the test of reason at times and chose to be unreasonable. For that you stand to be inspiring in the eyes of many.

I've post on the event website a link to the gallery of photos I took on my website. The key photo on this post is from Photastic Images who did excellent work creating promotional images and assisting in documenting the event. Thank you to all the photographers, videographers, crew, and staff around the event.

We went into this to serve those whom have served our country. We can honestly stand in the space of thanks from them and commit to creating our next event for the cause on August 29, 2009. Tomorrow is the big day. I'm sitting here creating the program booklet, final alterations then rush to print. So much to do and it has been great seeing our team come together over time. Sure there has been stress, people not getting what they want along the way. People from outside causing issues. Failed follow-ups and missed opportunities. These things are part of the growth cycle. You have to identify them as you move FORWARD and allow them to be what they are, stepping stones to a greater opportunity the next time.

We have a next opportunity in the works - The Detroit Erotica Ball. On Monday we'll be preparing how to handle the results from Soldier, but we'll also bring renewed attention to production of DEB, scheduled for October 25, 2008. Just a week before Halloween - there is a lot on the calendar during those two weeks. We have to carve our way into the forefront. Last year we had 750 people. This year we anticipate as a 2nd annual event higher attendance and better performance.

Silent Partners and 313FAD are cutting teeth and preparing some great productions.

"Fed Up With Violence" march

On Saturday, June 7th, 2008 a collective of Detroiters, motivational speakers and organizations will unite to March and Rally against violence. This will be a direct address to the recent increases in gang behavior, school closings, youth dropout rate and violence-involving Detroit’s youth.

On the heels of the Stop the Violence Weekend in May, the City of Detroit humanitarians are continuing to move in numbers and at high velocity to bring change and solutions for our youth.

With the closing of schools, recreation centers, after school programs and budget restraints, the youth are finding it difficult to stay involved in positive activities. The March and rally will culminate in the activists addressing the City of Detroit youth and spreading the word to unite with churches, organizations, human services, and political figures.

Event organizer and Founder of Fed Up with Violence, Baby Gee Joshua stated, “ We are losing our next generation to senseless acts of violence. The arrival of unity is at hand and we will continue to move forward and bridge the gaps until we can silence the violence in our community. We will reestablish the village.” The March is being presented as a joint venture between Fed up with Violence, Raphael Johnson, Kimberly Howard, Pioneers for Peace, COCO of FM98 WJLB, MADD, BAG-Brothers Against Guns, The Better Detroit Youth Movement, Tellusdetroit.com, True Infinity Solutionz, The City of Detroit, and a host of other organizations and sponsors, all united in this effort to reach the youth.

The March will begin at 11:00am at Hart Plaza and will proceed down Woodward to the Fox Theatre and return to Hart Plaza concluding at 12:30pm. The rally, which will follow the march, will commence at 1:00pm and will include speakers, an informational, and networking before concluding at 3:00pm.

Fed Up with Violence is in its third year of assisting the Detroit youth in making better choices, channeling aggression into positive efforts and community activism.

A Journalist's Perspective on the Raid On CAID

The "Raid at CAID" is an interesting incident that I had not heard of prior to today. I understand the police raided the art gallery at 2:20am and served 130 misdemeanor tickets and impounded 44 vehicles. My regrets and consolation to those who have been grossly mistreated by law enforcers who don't understand civil rights and act against the belief that in America you are innocent until proven guilty. THEY are our internal terrorists and I hope homeland security starts acting to take away the 'priviledge' of being law enforcers when they are found guilty.

Explaining My Absence from CAID
I wasn't there and I have to say that it has been months since I have been there. It isn't that I have been avoiding the place or anything of that manner. Transportation as it is for me via bus, makes CAID a difficult spot to get to on my own without some odd paths to take. I have to admit that while I'm a resolute believer that mass-transit requires support and use by the public to make it viable in the eyes of officials for funding. Sadly there are routes for the bus that I'm a bit leery about since I've not traveled them much. Funny how taking a route a few times has you feeling easy though. The bus is simply not the best spot to be messing with people -- the drivers and passengers do look out for each other. The only altercations I've ever witnessed were common-place quarrels likely between people that know each other. That is in keeping with statistics that cases of crime are most commonly acted out between people who know each other prior to the act of crime.

So yes the reason why I haven't been to CAID, and for that matter quite a few other places is a matter of our mass-transit system grossly under-serving our citizens. Your tax dollars go into a system where you can make a trip to the airport from nearly anyplace in the metro Detroit area for at most $2.00. AND you don't have to pay for parking, insurance, gasoline, maintenance on the vehicle, and the stress of driving!

AND IF YOU HAVE BEEN DRINKING - The BUS is a great way to avoid driving under the influence!! Now why is it we don't have MORE buses running between 1am and 3am?? I'm stll confused as to why the lack of support and scheduling for mass-transit CONDONES DRUNK DRIVING!

Enough transportation rant, back to the story about the raid at CAID ...

Are We In A Police State?
I hate to hear when the police act as if we live in a 'police-state', that 'they are the law'. I have heard stories about a police mafia of sorts - SWAT behaviour with taped over badges, masks, and inappropriate brutality. If you don't know the stories, they are being collected in the group for Raid at CAID. If you are a law enforcer that is hazed into being a member of these activities please report it to internal affairs or homeland security. That is your responsible action supporting the public which you are serving. Nobility is a matter of personal integrity. Can you stand proud in your job with your nobility and integrity in tact? It is a personal matter and it offers insight into why the world appears to be so "messed up". Your perception comes from a personal space... think about it and more importantly DO SOMETHING. The world has so many great THOUGHTS and few people acting on them.

My activities as a photographer become precarious at best when covering establishments after 2am, because any photos taken may contain evidence. That evidence can lead to suspicion and further action. I am a neutral party as an agent of the press would be by oath to the trade. My activity when at a function which I'm covering is that of an observer and employed person. You don't find me getting drunk when working. As an 'employed person' that can blur the lines of my responsibility on events. I would highly recommend to any host of an event that has issue with me capturing photos at an after-hours event please consider whether you want me doing that when employing me. Sadly the public can be the ones that mess up what you've intended to be a clean after-hours. There is a lot of risk when extending hours, and if you bring this up when insuring your event you'll find the price of insurance skyrockets. Sadly we can't trust the public to act in our best interest.

If you are a firm believer that what you do is your responsibility then take the after-hours drinking and illegal substance activities HOME and LEAVE THEM THERE. Realize that you are not safe and you jeopardize those around you by failing to comply with the law. Act as an adult, act responsibly.

MOVEMENT FESTIVAL

This weekend I'll be covering the techno music festival at Hart Plaza. MOVEMENT is the evolution of DEMF as it carries forward into the NINETH year of bringing world renowned electronic music back to and through Detroit. Detroit is considered home-base for the "techno" genre. We have people travel annually from Australia, Japan, Netherlands, England, Brazil, and all points around the globe.

So while I'm out at Movement shooting for various media publications I'll also be passing out flyers for The ART pARTy, Diva TV, and other organizations that are partnering with me on publicity. If you want your t-shirt / hat / pants / other item worn and shown off let me know and we'll discuss use of Fuzzytek as advertising space ;)

I've been taking photos for ResidentAdvisor for three years, primarily at the techno music festival "Movement: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival", or DEMF. I'd like to organize a group photo opportunity for the members of ResidentAdvisor whom are at the festival.

Scheduled time for the photo will be 3:00pm on Sunday, May 25, 2008. The location will be near the Underground Railroad Memorial statue at Hart Plaza on the steps leading down to the Detroit River. Please look for people holding black RA business cards.

Christmas present

It is time to get present to the magic of Christmas. Sometimes it is all about presents. Just ask Kelly here as she sits waiting for her treat.

But what we truly know is Christmas is about faith and love. This is what I've come in touch with over the years as my daughter has lived away from me. I received a beautiful present this year which sits beneath the tree, but what I'm treasuring now is the 5x7 photo she sent with the card. She's turning 17 tomorrow. Three long years away have had her changing. No more braces, she's got a wonderful smile, beautiful blonde hair and stands 5'7" tall. Her beauty isn't simply physical, she's been inducted into the National Honor Society. We share a passion for fashion and she's been tinkering with designing her own clothing.

My faith, hope, and love is that we'll one day bring things together and her design line will be in a show produced by her father.

My parents paid a visit to the Detroit area a couple weeks ago. The last time we saw each other I was just getting started as a photographer, at Easter 2005.

it wasn't a long visit, but it was wonderful to see them again. I hope we caught up on things sufficiently. Sometimes I wonder how much they know about my life the past few years. It can be a lot like the song "Cat's In The Cradle" as we move forward as an adult, forging our way creating ourself.

Thanks Dad and Mom for everything you've offered me. Sometimes I take and work with your advice, and quite often it seems I just keep going my own way with your love and support. You have always encouraged my creativity and drive to do something in this lifetime that is different.

JPG Magazine submissions

JPG Magazine has been expanding services on the site. It was simply collecting photos for the magazine with the first issues, which have now been assembled into a 390 page book selling for $64.99 - which can be previewed online. Now the site has stories, contacts, and they've enabled people to leave comments on each other's photos.

So I'm looking for registered contacts of course - check my profile and add me as a contact. There is no fee to join JPG Magazine's website and you can get your photos seen by quite a few people. Each month they select three themes for people to vote on photos that will go into the next issue of the magazine. Current themes are Family, Fashion, and Creative License. Since Fashion is a selected theme - I hurried up with a story about the Abandoned In Detroit project and post that... it is collecting votes in The Project category of stories.

Each theme allows one photo to be submitted at a time. So the only way to show those from the project is to submit them in a story as a group. Another strategy is to place photos into other themes on the site with them all linking back to the story.

Please click the photo and vote for it. This is the key image being used for the Abandoned In Detroit story. If you bring up my profile you'll see the stream of photos I've submitted. There's a wide range of images reflecting my breadth of portfolio content.

I've been busier taking event photos than fashion photos it seems. This isn't a problem - I've got to have money for food and bills. Eventually it would be nice to acquire a vehicle again. Then I'd be able to get where I need to so much easier.

The good thing is I'm establishing myself as a paid photographer. I've been asked over and over by new models for TFCD sessions. Sorry - my portfolio is established and unless you sign an agreement with a deposit toward a paid shoot I simply am not interested. There are quite a few models I know and just about any description as well. My connections around the Detroit area run very broad. This is something I've groomed over the past two years. Self promotion is required and investing in what you are up to creating as well.

AID PhotoBlog October + Planning November 19 photoshoot

The final Abandoned In Detroit photoshoot for 2006 will be held Sunday, November 19, 2006. We'll begin at noon, so please be at the shoot location between 10:30 am and 11:30 am at the latest. Our makeup artists, hair stylists, and designers need time to prepare you for the shoot.

The location(s) will be revealed within a week of the shoot. Preannouncing locations creates unwanted attention, if you are registered as a participant in the shoot you will be informed.

Wanted - Models, Makeup, Hair, and DESIGNERS!

At this time I have two designers new to the project interested in coming for the shoot. We've got existing designers eager to return with new creations as well. Models the deadline for registering is October 29, 2006. If you have already paid your project entrance fee you need to contact info@abandonedindetroit.com and indicate that you are attending and update your measurements and photos as needed. If you are a model new to the project you must pay the $50 project entrance fee by the deadline date along with sending your measurements, contact information, photos (headshot and bodyshot). Payment of entrance fee can be made through PayPal via buttons at the project profile on MySpace.

Future Plans

The momentum going into the holiday season is screaming for exhibition and runway - watch for those activities in December and January. Project photoshoots will be resume monthly scheduling beginning February 18, 2007 on third Sundays.

October's Shoot

The October shoot had a few catches along the way, but overall worked out very well. The location was moved with 30 hours left before shooting. This caused some havoc in planning resources such as a generator, lighting, and directions to the shoot. The people involved in the shoot were fantastic - everyone pulled together a beautiful presentation for the project showcasing designs from Hot Girl Collection and Vyrula Zel. Most of the people were new to the project and combining them with talent from prior shoots will create tremendous energy moving forward.

UPDATED: Bringing June 23rd post forward with rescheduling information... the event on MySpace for the next Mitten Movie Project night is now Tuesday July 18. We had to conceed that July 4 was not going to work for movie night and moved it a week back from the normal 1st Tuesday schedule. Then we heard a conflict in scheduling at the Main Arts Theatre for July 11, so now we have July 18

Throughout the day at Campus Martius Park Doors Open Detroit will give local residents a chance to gain discounted prices to the area's finest tourist attractions while enjoying live music and an artist and food market.

Building off the momentum of Super Bowl XL, a new, monthly signature series celebrating downtown Detroit, "Fourth Fridays", will kick off the evening. The warmth of a summer night, with the performance of a national music act and the aroma of al fresco dining will be the feel of this festival. Fourth Fridays will act as a stage for the entire downtown community incorporating nearby restaurants, clubs, and art galleries who will be keeping their "doors open" to the community. The historic streets of downtown will be again be transformed into a party for all.

The Event.

What:

A kick-off to the first official week of summer for local residents to learn more about tourism attractions in their own backyards. The event will feature a one-day Attractions Fair offering attraction and restaurant discounts coupled with one-stop-shopping for planning local summer outings. Also included will be the launch of “Fourth Fridays,” an evening event showcasing the best of downtown Detroit clubs, galleries, films, shopping and dining.

A Night of Poetry

I discovered CAID was scheduled on June 1 hold "A Night of Poetry", readings from local poets that was organized by Christina Kallery, a friend of mine on MySpace. I'm always interested in expanding the type of events that I cover.

In checking into the event I became friends with Norene Cashen, one of the poets reading. She stopped by and we travelled to CAID (which is a bit removed from the Woodward bus corridor). This was definately outside the norm for Norene, she tends to be a quiet person but could sense that I was genuinely interested in the event.

We arrived and I met Nick Sousanis, saw BJ from Real Detroit, and Marty from The Detroit News. I met Christina for the first time as well.

We listened to each poets readings. I stood along a wall and took a few photos of each as they were reading. I probably could have been closer, since the zoom limited me to waist and up photos. I would have liked to capture expressions better. The lighting was a bit stark, as would befit a poetry night. I did take additional photos which appear in the linked article in The Detroiter.

After the readings I talked a bit with Vievee and found that William Copeland is one of her students. I've been fascinated with William's spoken word sessions since seeing him several years ago during an protest march against occupation of Iraq. Then I found William was attending Renaissance Unity and occassionally saw him there. He organized a group called the Longhairz Collective. It was great to meet Vievee and share in knowing what William's been up to.

Norene and I headed back and I extended an invitation to the showing of InZer0 on June 6, which happily she did attend!

Tonight is InZer0 episode 2 at the Main Arts Theater in Royal Oak. Anticipating another GREAT night. Many celebrities coming out, newspapers and likely TV covering.

This weekend June 9-11 I'll be busy taking documentary photos during the filming of episode 4 of InZer0. So even though I'm listing these events I won't be attending...

Abandoned In Detroit planning

May 9 a planning meeting will be held at Nikki's Pizza, on Beaubien just south of Lafayette, in Greektown, Detroit. This is a meeting to discuss organization of the project, form directions and set the stage for tasks to be accomplished. There have been numerous photo shoots, it is now time to rally support in producing a runway event and future photo shoots to continue the momentum of the Detroit Designer Showcase.

Meeting is currently scheduled to start at 4:30pm and will last a few hours. I would like to ask anyone interested in a support role with the project to attend even a portion of the meeting. I will be available for several hours and if we have to move the meeting the next location will be Pulse on Monroe east of Woodward.

I woke up and was completely unaware of Daylight Savings time robbing me of an hour. GREAT! I began fielding calls from people and one of the first was from the property owner. He has concerns about guests on his property and is under scrutiny by the legal system. So I had to move fast and Jessica came through using her father's machine shop in Dearborn as a new base to get the models prepared. from there I was plotting where to head next. I also wasn't prepared with transportation, so miscommunication on my part, so I had to ask Kat and Milly to get me from Royal Oak to Dearborn. Thanks ladies!

Just about everyone got the message on change of location and directions on getting there. By 12:30 everyone had gathered and Milly was applying makeup and handling hair styling. I was going through outfits styling the look for the shoot... I guess that puts another label on me. I also messed around a little with Kat's eyeshadow.

I took photos around the back lot, adjacent machine shop, by the railroad tracks, and just goofing off getting ready. Around 4pm I was looking at heading into Detroit for a location, but the amount of daylight and rain was a slight concern. So instead we headed to an older machine shop location. Our group became more and more creative with concepts and I wish there was another photographer in our group to keep up with the flood of ideas.

I enjoyed the magnifying glass and metal filings photos that we wrapped up the shoot with. Both concepts that I'm very interested in exploring further. Thanks to everyone attending...

Description:

Call#1 - Looking for people ages 18-50 of any nationality for a nightclub scene in the first episode of InZer0. Extras are instructed to bring three outfits of decadent party clothes. Extras must come to the set with hair and makeup already done (modern day hair and makeup is sufficient).
Call#2 - Looking for people ages 18-50 of any nationality for a decadent party scene in the first episode of InZer0. No skin revealed, implied is possible depending on comfort. Extras are instructed to bring three outfits of sexy attire (cage dance clothes, S&M wear, belly dance outfit, etc.). Extras must come to the set with hair and makeup already done (modern day hair and makeup is sufficient).

Please Note:

Extras should bring something to keep themselves occupied between takes (book, magazines,homework, iPod, Sony PSP, etc.).

No alcohol allowed on set.

Extras should bring a snack or brown bag lunch if they need something to eat during the shoot. Although there may be food on the set, it will be for cast and
crew only. (Given our low/no budget, we cannot afford to feed the extras.)

Extras will be required to sign a release agreement.

The first episode of InZer0 will be screened at the Royal Oak Main Art Theatre on May 2, 2006.

This is a non-paying role.

PLAN

I've worked for several years creating a name for what I do in taking photos. I have done a LOT of free photos for people. New people come along and I understand... they need something to get started, just like I did. I understand "paying forward". It keeps things moving karmically.

Problem - established businesses that think my being there is just part of their good time and isn't worth paying for. I'm going to keep my camera down at clubs for a while if I don't have some form of compensation going on that is going to PAY MY BILLS. I've got people thinking that comping admission, comped drinks is enough to grant them use of my photos. Listen - you could pay me the price of a couple people's admission and I would be taken care of. It is ridiculous that other talent in the building is rewarded for being there and applying their skills and yet the photographer is overlooked.

If I'm taking your photo it could be for several reasons...

You are part of the ambience of the night
You are someone I would consider potentially being a model
You have some social standing that for some reason I became informed of, or was asked to capture
People that know me realize that I am not all about social titles.

You opened this blog post to the word pay-lance... yeah it is a spin on the word freelance. I am free to take on assignments, to work for multiple people unless I agree to a contract limiting me. My work remains MY WORK, not yours especially if you didn't pay me -- and we never did agreed on a payment that indicated you to have some right to the work produced. If I offer you a copy of what I've made - I expect it to remain YOUR copy and not be forwarded along as if you owned it. Ask me if it can go out. If you're intending to make some profit from what we produce clear that with me.

There comes a time when each person must assess where they are, what they are worth and DEMAND to be acknowledged as valuable. That is the ONLY way to clib the ladder of success and be safe.

I will be going out without a camera when people invite me without paying me. I do enjoy being around people. I would like to be able to relax and allow a personal relationship to form in my life at some point. Heck, Valentine's Day is coming up and I think it was 2001 when I was last dating someone that I could feel I had a significant relationship that could be celebrated.

Thought Collide Productions is looking for cast and crew for its new science fiction series, “inZer0.” Join us for a filmmaking opportunity to create the future of Detroit.

Thought Collidge Productions is working on the In-Zer0 film project and needs fashion designers, fabricators, etc. To find out more about In-Zer0 check the Thought Collide blog. The general look would be 1940's set 100 years into the future.

Fashion Designers
There will be a cast/crew search party on Jan 28 at Mephistos. I would like to hold an informal fashion show during the event where models would walk the event dressed in clothing potentially used in the film series In-Zer0. Potentially there could be 2-3 changes of clothing through the night. When wearing outfits the designer's information should be available with the model. So prepare a slip or business cards that can be used by the models. This is going to require immediate contact with me. I'll also be interested in hearing from makeup/hair stylists.

Fabricators (Jewelry / Artifacts)
Props for the film are required. This can range from jewelry, artifacts, to large objects and set designs. If you feel you have something to contribute, let us know. Wearable designs would be perfect for showcasing during the party @ Mephisto's Jan 28.

New camera ... the inevitable

On the camera front...
It was SUCH A STRUGGLE getting photos during the Tiesto show - my camera has had repeated problems with memory stick access. I sucked down the nasty pill and bought a replacement Sony F828 for $125 more than I spent on the F717 a year ago. It'll be nice to move up a step in technology. For now I'll be carrying spare cameras for those times my main decides to act up.

Wish me luck in finding business to cover the cost of this expensive solution.

I did some image editting on one of Latoya's photos. I really wanted a better image than what the camera captured. In the key photo you'll see the out-of-the-camera image and the editted image.

Those of you that know I use a laptop ... yes a touchpad for my editting. I drag my finger deftly across the surface to achieve the results you see here.

I did recently purchase a USB graphics tablet with mouse and graphics pen. The Adesso CyberTablet 6400 is a lower cost solution that I saw at the MicroCenter store, near Oakland Mall. I haven't embraced using it 100% yet. Just like I've never fully moved away from keyboard shortcuts. So this becomes an ADDITIONAL human interface device.

Liquid Silver postponed from Nov 26

Saturday I met Latoya and we went to Metro Image Gallery for photos. It was my first time visiting the location which is at 135 Cadillac near Ham Heaven and Checker Grille. So I met Jordan Fox and delivered 3 photos from my shoot with Jon & Briana for display in his gallery. I still owe him money to frame them. It gets pretty expensive to put your work on exhibit! I've spent $450 in ink, paper, frames in the past week. I'm glad Mike's got the Epson R1800 to print the photos with. It beats selecting them and requesting prints from the lab over the internet. Although I think the price from the internet lab is comparable to printing at home.

I've posted proofs from the shoot online. We stopped by MAC at Somerset and picked out makeup for the shoot. Yes - my first time doing makeup for a shoot. I had the artistic concept in my head, all it took is the person and supplies.

We first took photos of Latoya in her own makeup. She got pretty creative in the poses.

Then we took about 20 minutes to apply the metallics. I think I could have used a palette and body lotion in doing the makeup. This first experience I learned how the makeup came out of the kit and applied onto the body.

I'll be printing photos for display at Liquid Silver on Saturday. You'll find wonderful work for sale.

OK this is a busy weekend (Nov 11-13) but it is happening in any way other than I have planned. I walk toward an objective and end up getting side-swiped into something different but interesting.

Saturday
I was supposed to deliver framed prints to two galleries. I didn't have the photos printed to be able to do that. I had delays in getting the printer setup and framing supplies to the house.

I had a brief photo shoot with Kelley at Cranbrook since I wasn't going into Detroit. She and I have been planning to do this since February I think. Today's shoot was very good and we're both looking forward to extending it into another more significant shoot.

Sunday
Here are the plans:

Call Mairi Elle from Columbus about shooting Monday or Tuesday
Noon shoot with Meghan, first stop will be either downtown Royal Oak or Cranbrook.
2pm visit with Meghan to use Porsche in photos plus get photos of Kimmie with the Porsche. Wrap the shoot at 3pm and head home.
3:30pm Donovan, Melissa, Leticia come over and we head to an abandoned space for a photoshoot AID style.
6pm doors open for a fashion show at the Jazzloft produced by Ziam. The address is 525 Monroe above Golden Fleece Restaurant in Greektown. This is the preparation time for the show.
8pm fashion show begins.

Follow-up activities coming up...

Monday (Nov 14) - potential photoshoot day, several models inquiring - possibly from outside Michigan. Evening meeting of Living for Sundance. Delivery of framed photos for LFS exhibition on Nov 18 (opening night).
Tuesday (Nov 15) - planning meeting with Ziam (need to confirm this). Again have models interested in shooting - not sure how that will work with planning activities. Evening will be at Landmark Education working with the plans made with Ziam for December, January, February and beyond on Abandoned In Detroit and his projects (such as Liquid Silver).
Wednesday (Nov 16) - mid-day talk at library announced by ArtServe, undetermined if I'm attending. Probably will be a photoshoot day instead.
Thursday (Nov 17) - interview at One Source Talent (not sure of reputation, will be listening). Attend the evening tryout for models going to Liquid Silver show on Nov 26.
Friday (Nov 18) - evening opening of LFS Photo Contest exhibition at Edgewise Gallery. Two doors down from Oslo on Woodward, 3 blocks south of Comerica Park. I would love to have all my friends stop in and check it out.
Next weekend (Nov 19-20) - working afternoon/evening at Somerset as photographer at Santa's Castle. This is the kick-off weekend for Santa photos. Nov 20 is opening of 2nd gallery requesting prints that weren't delivered today. Maybe I can squeeze some in there - requires some discussion.

Tonight is the tryout for Ziam's runway shows on Nov 13 (Benefit) and Nov 26 (Liquid Silver). The place to be at 9pm is the JazzLoft above Golden Fleece Restaurant, 525 Monroe, Detroit 48226. Height is not a requirement in this runway event - ATTITUDE is required! Funky, fresh and free. This is a celebration of Detroit style.

I will not be able to attend the main portion of activities. I have a Landmark Education seminar completion night this evening and a photographer friend is going to pick me up in Highland Park afterward to make the trip to Detroit. Hopefully things will still be buzzing with Z when I finally get there.

I will be in Chicago this weekend (Nov 4-6) holding meetings regarding website development. I'm also hoping to hold a few shoots while there as well. Very short notice on my trip there.

December I may be planning a shoot mid-month. That depends on how working as a Santa photographer at Somerset Mall goes. I'll be on morning shift Wed-Fri also Tues and Thurs evenings, with a couple weekends also.
January will be a time for showcasing the work assembled and holding shoots in the snow.

Plans versus reality - do we have to live in disappointment when our plans are not met? ~Laughs~ I just step out of the condition for a moment look around and proceed.

Friday recap - Ziam and friends

My plans originally were to meet Ziam at Caribou Coffee in Royal Oak at 6pm. We spoke in the afternoon and shifted that to 8pm at Niki's in Detroit. So what happens? I run late 7:08 and watch my bus taking off from the bus stop from 1/4 mile away. I called the number I had been called from (Ziam has no phone) and tell them I'll be there at 9pm. I have to wait 45 minutes for the next bus, then travel an hour. I hate repeating that destiny over and over of missing the bus!!

What to do? Lover's Lane is a short walk from 13 Mile & Woodward. I walked in and opened up a photographer's account with them. I picked up a nice lace & sheer black gown and jacket set along with some stain black long gloves for the photoshoot in Toledo on Saturday.

I got to Niki's (Lover's Lane bag in one hand, laptop in a shoulder bag too) and wait to see Ziam. We wander over to Fishbones where Aisha(sp?) is waiting at the bar. I got the laptop plugged in and we looked through photos, drank a little and enjoyed the band playing pop music covers. I think we were kinda animated and the talk of several tables around us. I guess creative people (read crazy) attract attention. We had a great time sharing photos even if we didn't get to specifics in futures planning for AID. He promised to come out to my place and discuss things more thoroughly very soon.

Around 12:30 we wrapped things up and I had some time to wait for the 1:17 bus (last one) to get me home. I found the Rock Harvest Fest tent across the street from Delux on Monroe. Inside I saw Aphrodite and talked with her a bit. I like her and hope our paths continue to cross more frequently. She doesn't live that far away and we both seem to enjoy the same events too. I also saw John from the band White.

I left around 1am to get over to Woodward. Outside Oslo is a great spot to wait for the bus - you can people watch all night. SunnyJ came along and we talked a bit before she went inside. We need to hold a photoshoot soon. I LOVE the big blue eyelashes!!! Those HAVE TO be in the photoshoot.

Looking down the block I walked to Bleu to see who else might be out... I talked with Pam about photos I took from the Real Big Hairball. I also had to confess I had her mixed up with Mahogany and that's so weird because they really don't look the same. I guess I had my friends of friends association for them mixed up.

Then along comes Andi and I give her a big whirl around hug. She's great ... I could tell she was gonna have a fun time. For me it was time to board the bus, walk home and rest before the Toledo Halloween shoot.

Saturday I had a photoshoot with a new model on OMP. She goes by YogaChick. So we talked about potential locations and thought for sure it was gonna be a trip into Detroit. So she gets to my house and we look out at a day without the predicted rain, the leaves all changed in color and choose instead to go to Cranbrook.

I've been pining to shoot with the Canon AE-1 manual film camera from my grandfather. I've been looking through the viewfinder for a couple weeks now and love the depth. Funny thing is Tony asked me to help him with some website work and gave me a 135mm lens that fits the AE-1 perfect. I guess it isn't a high quality lens, but anything different is something for me.

I looked and thought about taking the AE-1 and chose at the last minute not to. We get to the location out on the path taking photos and the Sony keeps throwing shitty error messages on the screen about memory errors and format errors. I swapped memory sticks - same errors, swapped batteries - same errors. I think it is the camera I've used it so much this past year and got so many great photos from it. They seem to keep getting better too as I explore new conditions. But these error messages have been showing up more and more frequently the past month.

Frustrated and annoyed in front of a new model. I kept appologizing for the conditions of things. I finally said - we need to go back to the house and get the film camera, this one isn't working.

Sad - we spent maybe 30 minutes in that spot and got about 8 photos from it after all that effort. Got back in the car drove to a camera shop on Woodward and got a battery and several types of film. That was a $47 expense I hadn't planned.

We drove out to another area at Cranbrook featuring the architecture rather than nature. Here I am, new model and trying out film on a full manual camera for first time too. She really handled everything VERY well. The temperatures were only about 45 degrees too and the cloud cover was mixed. I popped a 24 exposure roll of 400 speed Fuji film in.

You know how it goes when you have something new and it seems kinda complex? Also I didn't read the instructions and trying to look like you know what you're doing. I swear it was strange. Funniest thing is I kept fogetting to advance the film. I was taking longer to setup the scene and check the composition. Click to take, and be amazed that the shutter worked, then try to figure what I missed to get the next photo to work. YEP - FULL MANUAL. Crank the film into the next frame. I tried some photos without a flash and then thought I'd better make sure I get the photos so I attached the flash and got the tripod from the car.

You have to understand that digital cameras when you adjust the settings and viewfind -- you see a simulated image revealing the settings. With a manual camera you get no feedback in the viewfinder to say you have good settings. I probably should have shot 2 or 3 rolls of film, but this was definately a test shoot for me and a new camera. Thanks to my model for understanding so well, she was outstanding through the whole shoot.

After the shoot we drove to Walmart and submitted the photos for one hour turn-around as double prints with a CD.

I worked with the photos a bit and created some pretty cool images. Walmart's CD kinda sucks... the images from the film are averaging only about 750kb. My digital camera is averageing 1.8mb for files. Fortunately I understand my editing tools well enough to compensate.

I used the Virtual Painter plug-in for PaintShop Pro to get the artistic effects on several of the images. However I don't simply rely on the tool to give me the completed work.

Weekend plans for NYC killed

Well there seems to be a trend here that is preventing me from going to NYC this weekend.

Person we were to be staying with may not be home due to circumstances beyond his control.
Andi says her ex-husband is being a jerk about the modeling. He had agreed to take care of their son and since this trip was for modeling he's decided not to support her going -- refusing to watch his son for the weekend.
Aaron's car died yesterday and he has no transportation to go. That was going to be how I got there too.

SO --- As much as I hate to say it ...
No, I'm not going to New York this weekend.
No, I'm not going to Modelween.
And No, it is not possible that I would be making a visit to my daughter on the return trip home.

NYC trip plans for this weekend

This weekend I'm headed to Modelween with Andi & Aaron. We'll be going out to see Ralph in Brooklyn.

It's gonna be a great networking event for models & photographers. I wish I'd printed business cards but the scraps of paper I use will work OK. I may need 400 'cards' though. Thinking about the night being half photographers and half models has me thinking the number of cameras is gonna be insane.

Right now I'm sorting through photos to assemble a portfolio of prints. I'm very overdue in getting this done and will have to run a CD in for processing tonight to get the photos back by Thursday morning.

Chickee thank you for that music video bulletin - it reflects my mood now. It also has some cool NYC scenes in it. Reposting it here for your enjoyment...

I headed out for a night of debauchery with Aaron. We went to the Real Big Hairball at the Royal Oak Music Theater. This was a great performance art showcase by the hair salons around town. Nothing quiet like it and the line outside when we arrive attested to its popularity. Inside the seats were all taken and people standing all around. Seating was pretty open and I didn't realize that I could have been right up to the stage until the night was just about over. Still from my vantage point I got some great photos. And I got the full stage in view, which if I was too close would have been impossible.

As the hairball closed we took a quick group photo with some people. Then headed over to Sky Club, the official after-party location. The Hairball had models being staged at Sangria for the show... they said there were over 140 models working. At Sky Club many of the models enjoyed dancing along with their friends and family. It was packed shoulder to shoulder with beautiful people.

I need to write up a 600 word review for The Detroiter and submit that for publication by Monday Oct 17.

I had a hip-hop music video shoot with Mz Hypnotic in Southfield. I brought Yarnell and Patrick in as models for the shoot. We didn't quite have 8 people for pairs, so I ended up in the shoot as well.

I did prepare for the shoot bringing a couple pairs of baggy jeans for Patrick and myself. Funny, I never figured that I would want to wear the 38 inch waist jeans ever again. {I used to weigh 225 pounds in 2002, 245 in 1997.} I guess I had a use for them, that surprised me.

The video shoot was held in several places including in Mz Hypnotic's neighborhood, the Southfield Marriott, and Crossroads concert saloon in Taylor. It was very nice to have them take care of transportation for me.

I was just too tired to get myself to Bleu to see Detroit's Finest DJs - love you all.

I wish I had gotten VIP tickets for better photos of Armin. Shooting from the dance floor didn't result in too many good photos of the DJ. I probably should have exercised some of my news/website contacts. More planning next time.

Detroit Film, The Passenger, Debuts Tuesday

On October 4, metro Detroiters have the opportunity to be among the first people in the country to view the new Detroit movie, The Passenger.

The full-length feature film – which is about an artist caught between a lackluster 9-to-5 job and the fascinating world of Detroit’s underground – will be shown at Novi’s Emagine Theater on Tuesday night at 7 pm and again at 9 pm.

Written and directed by Jamie Sonderman, a Detroit-native with an intense passion for the city, The Passenger is Sonderman’s fifth film, and is the first full-length feature film of Thought Collide, a conglomerate of creative Detroiters – actors, photographers, singers, producers, sound specialists, and more – that the screenwriter founded with Passenger-executive producer, Ed Gardiner.

The Passenger is the second film of the Mitten Movie Project, a mini film festival of sorts that brings films with Michigan-ties to the public through various formats, such as shorts, feature lengths, music videos, and documentaries.

Films that are part of the Mitten Project, which is presented by Thought Collide in association with Emagine Theater, can be seen at 6:30 pm the first Tuesday of every month at the Novi movie theater. Tickets to Tuesday's screening of The Passenger are $10 each.

2:05pm Ralph arrives from NYC for the Abandoned In Detroit (AID) photoshoot. He'll be staying with me a couple weeks. During that time I'll get started in male modeling. I'll have a great guide.

6:00pm Edgewise Gallery opens two doors down from Oslo, 1428 Woodward, Detroit. I'm pumping this up as a meet-and-greet for people in the AID shoot. Come out and meet my film making / art scene friends.

Jan D tells me she is playing the music I love at Slows Bar, across from Tiger Stadium, Michigan and Trumbell. I'm not sure how much energy I will be spending tonight, Ralph and I may stop there briefly.

Saturday

8:00am - 9:30am SideEffect is holding a CD release party benefits to MADD at Canterbury Village. I'll be on site taking photos.

11:00am - 8:00pm Abandoned In Detroit photo shoot. We are parking in the lots at the NW corner of Rosa Parks and Michigan, behind The Works. More information is going to be posted this afternoon on the AID website. The location for the shoot is Michigan Central Station (the train station across from Tiger Stadium). You will not know how to get inside without contacting me and being IN THE GROUP. DO NOT APPROACH it directly!! You will blow the shoot. Please read the guidelines posted in the blog

After the shoot we can head to Bleu for dancing and celebrate Kimmie's birthday.

Could be a day of recouperation and photo processing. That evening The Brazilian Girls will be playing at St Andrews Hall. I would love to see that show!!!

Arts, Beats, Eats 2005

Tons and tons and tons and tons and tons of photos to go through. It is times like this that I'm not so sure about photography, perhaps I just have to bring things in focus more. There are some great photos that happened this weekend. Best advice I can give is to check the galleries that are going to fill up from this link at fuzzytek.com. There's even a gallery there that points you around to the other galleries related to activities listed in this blog post that aren't part of the main group of photos.

Friday

Friday night I went to ABE (Arts, Beats, & Eats) in Pontiac with Mike (TimeFragment) to take photos of the bands there. We saw Crossfade and Seether. I managed to get into VIP between the two sets and got great shots of Seether. Mike was surprised that I got into VIP, but he knows I manage to do that sort of stuff regularly.

The photos from VIP were GREAT. I hope I can sell a few and make some money. Lord knows I could use it.

It was great meeting Scott Legato during the show. It was funny to have met his father and mother just a few weeks ago at Woodward Dream Cruise. They mentioned me to him - he was blown away realizing who I was. That was a freaky and fantastic meeting.

Saturday

The day of Pure Detroit Design Lab's runway show. Mike and I drove in and met Rachel and James when they arrived. We had a great time with Vinnie & Rob at Detroit Choppers before the fashion show and told them we would return afterward.

At the temporary store for the Design Lab the models gathered and began pulling together outfits. Time came for runway and things came together great. Most of the models wore two outfits and the rotation looked comfortable.

After the fashion show our group held a quick photo session in the back space of the temporary design lab. Then we headed to Detroit Chopper and met Casey and Athena at their tent. We setup a shoot using their bikes with Kim & Rachel in a small parking area across the street from Mill Street.

Kim's friend Katrina came down and I stuck with them as we went over to see Better Than Ezra. The performance was great, but the crowds were far less animated than they were for Seether and Crossfade. Most of the time the VIP area was seated in the chairs. I guess they were conserving energy for Rick Springfield who was to follow. Our group didn't stay for Rick to come on. Kim & Katrina got backstage with Better Than Ezra. I met up with Mike, Rachel and James since they weren't with us when we entered VIP. We decided to head to the car, the night was pretty much over.

Sunday

Rachel, Mike, James, and I returned Sunday afternoon to catch more of the scene in photos. Sunday turned out to be a shorter more relaxed day than Saturday's activities.

Monday

I returned in the afternoon with Tony to get more photos. Tony wanted to discuss a few things over dinner. After dinner he headed home. I stayed and met a bunch of people, as I always do. I saw Kim from Broadzilla. Met the band RadioCraft and held a quick photo shoot with them. And I met Amanda, and held a fast photo shoot with her on the patio of Sevin. I eventually headed to the bus stop and took the Smart bus home around 9:30pm.
